REQUIREMENTS:
Education Level:
Master’s degree in an approved speech pathology program, a valid South Dakota School Service Specialist certificate with school speech-language pathologist endorsement, and a valid South Dakota Speech-Language Pathology license.
Experience Desired:
Experience in the field of speech/language pathology desired.
Other Requirements:
Knowledge of Special Education Law (IDEA). Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong listening and problem-solving skills, skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. In-depth knowledge of effective teaching strategies and subject matter. Portrays a positive self-concept and attitude toward teaching. Maintains professional appearance. Demonstrated ability to work courteously and cooperatively with people in a multi-person environment. Ability to work efficiently with a wide range of students, staff and administration. Demonstrated computer skills. Ability to handle stress and the ability to exercise self-control. React to change productively. Demonstrated ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality in dealing with individuals and/or their records.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires constant eye-hand, mind-eye coordination, physical dexterity, hearing acuity, the ability to frequently walk, stand, bend, stoop, speak, and possibly lift up to 50 pounds. Repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers is required. A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a car.
Clearances:
Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Provide appropriate screening and evaluation services to identify speech and language handicapped students.
- Assess and diagnose language, voice, articulation, and fluency impairment.
- Provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of students with speech, language and hearing deficits, utilizing appropriate caseload selection, scheduling, follow-up, and dismissal procedures.
- Lead social skills groups.
- Assist and guide parents, teachers, and other professionals in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech, language, and hearing impairments.
- Provide Supervision and Assistance to Speech-Language Pathology Assistants.
- Submit Medicaid documentation.
- Obtain physicians orders for service.
- Serve as a consultant to teachers and school staff members regarding speech and language development.
- Maintain thorough records for the individual student receiving speech, language, and hearing services (including permission forms, test records, diagnostic and final reports, and other records as deemed necessary).
- Maintain general records containing information appropriate to the compilation of Aberdeen School District, state, and federal reports for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requirements.
- Meet all deadlines associate with Special Education regulations and IEP processes.
- Attend all placement meetings for students entering or continuing in the speech/language and hearing program and assist in writing the IEP.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education/Building Principal/Speech-Language Coordinator.
