Description
The Department of Chemistry at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a Laboratory Technician position. In consultation with the Chemistry Department, this technician performs technical work in a chemical laboratory and provides instructional support by ordering, issuing, preparing and maintaining laboratory materials, supplies and associated equipment. The technician also performs other duties as required, which could include teaching a laboratory section on occasion for additional compensation subject to experience and education.

Typical duties for this position may include the following.

1. Prepares and dispenses chemical materials used for laboratory classes. These materials may include acids, bases, buffers, stains, reagents, chemicals, and unknown compounds.

2. Collects materials used in laboratory classes, washes appropriate glassware, sterilizes equipment, and restocks or manages waste as appropriate.

3. Prepares unknowns for students to analyze.

4. Sets up and prepares classes demonstrations as requested. May need to use general knowledge of the area to develop these demonstrations with minimal supervision.

5. Orders, receives, inventories, and stocks materials, supplies, and equipment for laboratory use; maintains chemical stockroom and chemical inventory database.

6. Evaluates equipment and chemicals for cost, availability, suitability, and other factors.

7. Collects and monitors production of hazardous waste and toxic materials from laboratories; collects and properly stores waste and manages waste collection bi-annually. Sits on institutional safety committee.

8. Oversees maintenance of equipment and supervises instrument repair and calibrations.

9. Maintains records of student safety trainings, laboratory inspections, materials loaned to students or departments.

10. Manages chemical hygiene plan.

11. Oversees cylinder gas rentals and NMR cryogens.

12. Assists Department Chair in maintaining administrative budget.

13. Perform routine record keeping and report writing.

14. May support faculty research (ordering chemicals and supplies).

15. Performs other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time, 10-month, 37.5 hours/week, benefits-eligible hourly position. Normal working hours are 8:30 am - 5 pm and there is a shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours time period. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities are often assigned. Pay rate is $23.85 per hour.


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

A M.A. in chemistry (or related field) is preferred, while those with a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and 5-7 years experience as a laboratory technician will be considered. Individuals must have experience working in a chemical laboratory and must be able to work without direct supervision. Individuals must be proficient using MS Office and comfortable with typical instrumentation found in chemistry labs. Experience with PeopleSoft would be an asset. Physical demands of the job require the individual to be able to bend, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push and/or pull moderate to heavy (60-75 lbs) amounts of weight.
