The Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona is world-renowned for the breadth and depth of its research and education programs in Optical Sciences. The college's Photonics program is one of four major research areas, whose scope ranges from integrated photonic and fiber components and systems for next-generation optical networks to new tools, such as small-footprint, high-throughput multiphoton microscopes, high-power semiconductor lasers, 3-D displays and optical-computing.
In recent years OSC and UArizona have invested strongly in new faculty with expertise in Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) and this search continues to expand that investment. QISE is embraced as one of the core research initiatives in University of Arizona's strategic plan. In Fall 2022, the OSC has launched a Masters in Science (MS) subplan with an emphasis in QISE. Recently, OSC has taken the leadership role in establishing the highly-interdisciplinary Center for Quantum Networks (CQN), in collaboration with our College of Engineering: an NSF-funded Gen 4 Engineering Research Center (ERC). A notable unique aspect of CQN is a strong collaboration with researchers in social science disciplines to research issues pertaining to important applications and societal implications of quantum technologies.
Our QISE faculty members are engaged in a wide array of interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects spanning quantum-inspired and quantum-enhanced sensing with photonic and opto-mechanical devices, quantum computing with photonic and superconducting qubits, and various aspects of quantum communications. QISE faculty expertise now spans quantum information, detection and estimation theories, quantum opto-mechanics, non-linear and quantum optics for squeezed and entangled light generation in integrated photonic devices, superconducting qubits, quantum imaging and sensing using non-classical light sources and measurements, and a variety of photonic and RF devices that underlie the technology stack necessary to build the quantum internet of the future. This includes intricate designs of scalable integrated-photonic-coupled solid-state defect center qubits, superconducting to photon transduction, microwave and photonic spin control to non-linear high-efficiency quantum frequency conversion.
This open-rank faculty position is envisioned to complement the current QISE expertise at OSC and at UArizona as a whole. Theorist and Experimentalist candidates are both encouraged to apply. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
(1) solid-state quantum devices such as color centers, cold atom qubits and quantum dots,
(2) non-linear and quantum integrated photonic and phononic devices and systems,
(3) quantum-coherence preserving superconducting to photon transduction, and
(4) engineering physics of complex light-matter interactions, including open quantum systems.
Candidates with a proven track record of interdisciplinary and theory-experiments collaborative research, will be considered highly favorably.
The successful candidate will help bridge different genres of existing quantum platforms and a diverse group of theorists and experimentalists at the University of Arizona working on a wide array of topics in QISE ranging from fundamental science studies to large-scale quantum systems engineering efforts.

Duties & Responsibilities:
This tenure/tenure-track position anticipates a candidate with demonstrated strength in their field of research. Successful candidates are expected to set up a world class research program and demonstrate strong commitment to teaching. Duties include:
- Cultivating a world-renowned research program.
- Establishing a strong record of student mentorship and teaching.
- Participating in both undergraduate and graduate education.
- Participating in service and outreach for the College.
For private sector or government laboratory applicants, lack of a proven teaching and extramural research funding record could be remedied with other related credentials that demonstrate strong communications skills and a demonstrated history of technical depth and leadership. We seek an individual who is able to work with and attract a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students and colleagues. Development of novel courses pertaining to the candidate's area of expertise, as well as exceptional teaching of our core curriculum, is expected.
Minimum Qualifications
- The applicant must have a Ph.D. (or an equivalent doctorate degree) with 4 or more years of professional experience after their Bachelors Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Material Science and Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Candidates with all levels of expertise from early career through senior faculty are encouraged to apply.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience and demonstrated leadership roles in post-doctorate research.
