The Post-Star seeks a crossover local sports-and-news writer to work with the sports editor and step in to help with editing and production during major events and occasionally to step in for the sports editor during vacation and sick days. Top candidates will have work or internship experience in sports writing or have an educational background in sports journalism or a related field. They will be well-versed in various sports, especially high school sports, and understand the language and jargon most often used in sports coverage. Top candidates will be equally comfortable writing play-by-play stories directly after games as well as profiles of athletes. The preferred candidate will also be willing to cover sports-adjacent stories, such issues and trends affecting local sports, or stories highlighting recreational activities or informal leagues. Top candidates will have experience, in work or education, with shooting and editing photos and video. They will have an understanding of AP sports style and will be able to work accurately on deadline to produce stories for print and online publication. Some of the person's time weekly will be spent in the news department working with the news editor. Weekend and night work will be required. An associate degree or higher is required.
