Description: The Princeton Language and Intelligence Research Fellowship is a newly established research fellowship for people who have recently received or are about to receive a Ph.D. or doctorate degree and work on large AI models. Princeton Language and Intelligence (PLI) seeks to develop fundamental understanding of large AI models; enable their application to research and education across academic disciplines; and study societal and ethical implications of AI as well as develop methods to avert any harms. PLI is committed to keeping AI expertise and know-how in the public sphere. Member faculty hail from more than a dozen departments, representing the sciences, humanities, social sciences, and engineering. Princeton Language and Intelligence Research Fellows will be part of the PLI core principles and design team - composed of best-in-class faculty, research fellows, research scientists, research software engineers, postdocs and graduate students - and will have access to PLI's $9.6M GPU cluster (300 H100s), among the largest machine learning computer cluster in academia. In addition, PLI seed grants enable advances in AI-related research in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering, along with research on the effects of AI on society (ethics, fairness, safety). Candidates should have a strong interest and track record in design, understanding, or engineering of large AI models, or their applications. Ongoing research projects at PLI work with language, images, multi modal data, science/math, code, scientific data, etc. We are also interested in AI safety, fairness, and alignment. Princeton Language and Intelligence Research Fellows are appointed through the Center for Statistics and Machine Learning. Fellows receive a competitive salary, benefits, office and equipment, compute resources, and yearly research support. Appointments are for one year with the possibility of renewal. The fellowship commences on or about September 1, 2024. Postdoctoral requirements: *Both PLI and Princeton University place high value on in-person collaborations and interactions, and we expect selected candidates to participate in-person. *Ph.D. is expected. *The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University.
