Full Time Faculty, Graduate Nursing (Open Rank)

Summary:
This is a 9-month, full-time, campus-based faculty position in the Graduate Nursing Program, Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions, with responsibilities for teaching, scholarship, and service. Primary duties include: student advising and mentoring, curriculum development, service to the school, nursing unit, program, and university, and continued scholarship in the discipline of nursing. Teaching responsibilities include 24 contact hours per academic year (usually 12 contact hours per semester) in the Graduate Nursing program, primarily in online courses. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordination of graduate nursing courses, student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts; program assessment and evaluation; and engagement in the life of the university. The graduate nursing faculty member fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as defined in the Stevenson University Policies and the School of Nursing and Health Professions Full-Time Faculty Job Description. Rank and title are determined at the time of hire and will be commensurate with education and experience.

Education/Experience:
Doctoral degree in nursing required; PhD in nursing strongly preferred. Candidates with a doctorate in education (EdD/ PhD) with significant experience in graduate nursing education and/or other credentials may be considered. Master’s degree in nursing required, if the doctoral degree is not in nursing. Two years of post-Master’s experience (clinical and/or college level teaching) required. Unencumbered Maryland or multi-state registered nurse license required. Strong commitment to teaching excellence required; previous experience teaching in a graduate nursing education program, and/or in an online environment strongly preferred. CNE or certification in an area of clinical practice preferred. Curriculum development and program evaluation experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Position requires additional hours for meetings and events, including days, evenings, and weekends.

Essential Functions:
The essential functions for the full-time faculty member in Graduate Nursing are taken from the Full-Time Faculty Job Description developed by the faculty of the Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY Engage in instructional activity totaling 12 contact hours per semester and/or 24 contact hours per academic year as assigned by Academic Program Administrator (APA).
  • Teaching responsibilities include time spent in courses and in immediate preparation for them; preparing teaching materials; conferring with and providing timely feedback to students on course-related matters; directing individual and group studies; reviewing projects and papers; evaluating assignments, examinations, presentations, and other course work in timely fashion; supervising independent study projects; and submitting mid-term and final grades. Stevenson University uses the Blackboard course management system.
  • Administrative responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis.
  • Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, supervisor evaluations, and other relevant sources of feedback.
  • Prepare courses and syllabi in accordance with published faculty guidelines.
  • Schedule and hold at least three office hours per week.
  • Conduct student advising activities including time spent providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding academic, curricular, career and/or continuing education matters.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly.
  • Participate in the assessment activities of the Program, Department, School, and University.
  • Attend meetings and/or workshops related to instruction (e.g., teaching methods, assessment).
  • Implement new teaching methods in existing courses as warranted (includes incorporating evidence-based practice).
  • Participate in general curriculum development, assessment, and other departmental activities associated with a full-time university teaching position.
  • Mentor students in capstone and practicum courses as requested.
  • Serve as course coordinator for nursing course(s) as requested, including the implementation of new teaching methods, strategies, or tools in graduate nursing courses.
  • Provide course coordinators and/or program director with all required course data, as related to course and program assessment and/or accreditation.
  • Evaluate and revise curricula as warranted and/or requested.
  • Conceive and develop new courses to expand academic offerings in nursing as requested.


SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY
  • Develop and maintain self-directed intellectual pursuits, including research, that enhance teaching effectiveness and/or clinical competency.
  • Conduct self-directed research with students (bench, educational, or other) of a quality that could lead to presentation or publication, including presentation/publication in venues dedicated to graduate research.
  • Engage in intellectual pursuits outside of the classroom that are related to professional interests (e.g., grant-writing, peer review, chapter/textbook/journal authorship).
  • Attend conferences, workshops, meetings, and talks related to professional interests.
  • Attend meetings of professional societies.
  • Pursue and maintain clinical certification(s).
SERVICE ACTIVITY
  • Department service includes contributing to student recruitment, retention, and registration efforts; attending departmental and nursing unit meetings; participating in Open Houses and recruiting efforts; attending and participating in planning and coordination of departmental and nursing unit events; and establishing professional relationships to generate clinical placement opportunities for students.
  • University service includes, but is not limited to, service on the University, School and Departmental committees.
  • Assist in planning/participate in departmental and school events, such as pinning ceremonies, research symposia, etc.
  • Serve on assigned nursing department committee(s).
  • Engage and participate in the life and work of the program, nursing unit, School of Nursing and Health Professions, and Stevenson University.
  • Attend all Faculty/Staff University, School, Nursing Unit, and program meetings.
  • Attend all convocations, in-services, etc., including commencement exercises.
  • Complete all required trainings and professional learning assignments.
  • Participate in faculty governance.
  • Mentor students (e.g., club moderator, mentoring programs – distinguished from guiding research or academic pursuits)
  • Actively participate on Nursing Unit, School, and University committees.
  • Participate in Nursing Unit, School, and University assessment activities, including, but not limited to, annual assessment of courses and periodic assessments of programs for University and/or accreditation/regulatory purposes.
  • Mentor and advise new faculty.
  • Serve on Faculty Mentoring and Evaluation Committee(s) as requested.
