Job Summary
The University of Kentucky's Division of Laboratory Animal Research is recruiting students 18 years and older that enjoy working with animals to support research that improves the health and welfare of humans and animals. This paid internship will help train you for a career in Laboratory Animal and/or Veterinary Science.
Students will be hired through the University of Kentucky's STEP's program providing an hourly wage of $15.00 per hour and benefits to successful candidates. After 6 months of satisfactory performance and training you may also be eligible for a full-time University of Kentucky staff position or you can choose to continue as a STEPS employee. After 12 months you have the potential to become certified as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician through AALAS, a membership association of professionals employed around the world in academia, government, and private industry who are dedicated to the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals, as well as the quality research that leads to scientific gains that benefit people and animals.
You will be trained in routine and specialized animal caretaking duties, including:

- Safe handling of multiple species of animals including: mice, rats, non-human primates, alpaca, quail and dogs.
- Feeding & watering animals according to their prescribed diets
- Changing cages, leaning pens or runs
- Observing animals regularly during the day, noting & reporting any variances in eating, drinking or deviation from normal habits
- Observing & reporting changes in environmental parameters (i.e., temperature, humidity, lighting, etc.
- Assisting in maintaining records of animals such as weight, health, and food consumption
- Operating and maintenance of washers & sterilizers to maintain proper working conditions
- Efficient operational organization & flow of supplies & equipment throughout the facilities
