Building Inspector
POSITION SUMMARY:
Interprets and enforces state and local building codes and ordinances within municipality. Under general supervision of the Assistant and Deputy Fire Chief.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews construction blueprints, permit plans and specifications to determine compliance with state and municipal building codes/ordinances; suggests modifications as needed.
- Conducts field inspections to ensure compliance with current building codes, regulations and ordinances.
- Issues tickets/notices to comply on violations and issues “stop work” orders for work without permits or in an unsafe manner; maintains records, pictures, files and reports regarding inspections and plan review activities and/or findings for use in court, if required.
- Attends local housing court when needed.
- Investigates and responds to complaints of code violations related to signage, building occupancy, nuisances, housing conditions, construction, land use, zoning, dumping and other code related issues.
- Reviews requests for and issues building permits, certificates of occupancy, and certificates of compliance.
- Reports any situations that arise which are outside the scope of the position to the Deputy Fire Chief or Fire Chief.
- Recommends and participates in drafting revisions to municipal codes and enforcement policies & procedures.
- Performs work independently with minimal supervision
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED. College and /or business coursework preferred.
- A minimum of five (5) years of previous experience working with all phases of construction practices and building codes, plus three (3) years in code enforcement or property maintenance inspection is required.
- Requires skill in reading and interpreting construction specifications/blueprints and ability to inspect work in progress.
- Knowledge of construction practices, state and local building codes and ordinances is required.
- Requires ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with contractors, staff and property owners.
- Requires ICC certification as residential or commercial inspector
- Computer proficiency and demonstrated knowledge of computer software applications such as work processing, spreadsheets and databases required. Must have a working knowledge of general office equipment and other tools utilized during field inspections.
- Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, follow instructions and make sound decisions..
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must have a current driver’s license with a clean record.
- Employment is conditioned on successful completion of a 90 day probationary period.
- Hiring is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and hear; sit, stand; walk and reach; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, operate objects and/or controls. The employee will be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and /or crouch routinely. Incumbent should be able to withstand inclement weather conditions as inspections may require exposure to the elements. This position may require employees to occasionally lift up to 50lbs.
